Women's Sexual Health
You are not alone, and this is not your fault. Vaginismus is more common than you think, and it is completely treatable.

If you're reading this page, it may have taken a lot of courage just to search for help. We want you to know that at Dr Chakravarthy's Wellness Clinic, you will be treated with complete respect, empathy, and zero judgement. Many women have walked this path before you, and many have found relief and joy on the other side. You deserve the same.
Vaginismus is an involuntary tightening or spasm of the muscles around the vaginal opening that makes penetration painful, difficult, or impossible. It can affect intercourse, gynaecological examinations, and even tampon insertion. This reflex happens without conscious control -- it is not something you are choosing to do.
It is one of the most common female sexual pain disorders, yet many women suffer in silence for years because they feel embarrassed or believe nothing can be done. The truth is that vaginismus responds very well to treatment, and most women go on to enjoy comfortable, fulfilling intimacy.

Vaginismus is classified into two types: primary vaginismus, where penetration has never been possible, and secondary vaginismus, which develops after a period of normal sexual function, often triggered by childbirth, surgery, infections, menopause, or emotional trauma.
Vaginismus is a physiological reflex, not a personal failing. Here is what is actually happening in your body.
The pelvic floor muscles surround the vaginal canal. In vaginismus, these muscles involuntarily contract, narrowing the canal and creating a "wall" sensation.
Illustration shows cross-section view of vaginal canal surrounded by pelvic floor muscles (pubococcygeus & bulbocavernosus group).
Vaginismus is maintained by a self-reinforcing reflex loop. Breaking this cycle is the core of successful treatment.
Treatment systematically interrupts this loop using progressive desensitisation and cognitive techniques.
The cornerstone of treatment. Graduated dilators retrain pelvic floor muscles to remain relaxed during insertion. You progress through sizes at your own pace -- typically over 8 to 12 weeks.
No surgery, no painful procedures -- just patient, body-led progress with clinical guidance.
Involuntary muscle reflex of the pubococcygeus, bulbocavernosus & levator ani group
Conditioned fear response stored in the autonomic nervous system, modifiable through therapy
Treatment success rates of 90-95% reported in peer-reviewed clinical literature (Masters & Johnson, ESSM)
Many women don't realise their symptoms have a name and a treatment. Here are some common signs:
Pain, burning, or stinging during attempted penetration
Feeling like there is a "wall" blocking the vaginal entrance
Inability to have intercourse despite wanting to
Difficulty or inability to insert a tampon
Anxiety or fear at the thought of penetration
Tensing up or involuntarily closing your legs during intimate moments
Avoidance of intimacy or gynaecological examinations
Feeling broken, alone, or hopeless about your situation
If any of these resonate with you, please know that help is available and recovery is very much within reach.
Vaginismus often has a combination of physical and emotional roots. Understanding the cause is the first step toward healing.
Treatment is gentle, gradual, and always at your pace. There is no rush, no pressure, and no pain.

Our comprehensive treatment programme combines multiple evidence-based approaches, personalised to your unique needs. Each step is designed to build confidence gradually, ensuring you always feel safe and in control.
Your first consultation is a conversation, not an examination. We listen to your experience, understand your concerns, and create a personalised plan together. Many women tell us that simply being heard and validated already feels like a huge relief.
Using graded vaginal dilators (trainers), you gently and gradually train the vaginal muscles to relax. This is done privately, at home, at your own pace. Each step builds on the last, and most women are surprised at how manageable the process is.
You'll learn specific deep-breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness techniques that help calm the pelvic floor muscles and reduce the anxiety response associated with penetration.
Working through fears, negative associations, and emotional blocks is a critical part of recovery. Our counselling approach addresses the root psychological factors using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and guided therapeutic exercises in a warm, supportive setting.
Guided exercises teach you to identify, isolate, and consciously relax your pelvic floor muscles. This body awareness is a powerful tool that gives you control over the involuntary tightening response.
When appropriate, we involve your partner in the treatment journey. Education and guided sensate focus exercises help partners understand the condition and support recovery, strengthening your bond together.

Of women treated successfully
Vaginismus has one of the highest treatment success rates of any sexual health condition. Women who once believed they could never have comfortable intimacy have gone on to enjoy fulfilling relationships, start families, and feel completely at ease with their bodies.
Hundreds of Malayalee, Tamil, and South Indian women -- both at home and abroad -- have walked this journey and found healing. These are their stories, shared with permission. All names have been shortened to protect privacy.
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
I was married for 14 months and we could not consummate. Every attempt ended in tears and my husband would feel guilty for hurting me. Dr Chakravarthy and Dr Asha were the first doctors who told me it was not my fault. The dilator therapy felt scary at first, but the way Dr Asha explained each step made it so manageable. Within four months, we were finally able to be intimate without pain. We are now expecting our first baby. To any Malayalee girl going through this -- please do not wait.
Kottayam, Kerala
We were both terrified to seek help. As a Christian Malayalee couple, talking about these things even to a doctor felt impossible. Dr Chakravarthy created such a safe atmosphere -- no judgement, just science and kindness. He treated us together. After 10 weeks of guided exercises and counselling, our marriage feels complete. We tell every newly married couple in our church group not to suffer silently.
Chennai, Tamil Nadu
I am a Tamil Brahmin and grew up with very little knowledge about my own body. After three years of unconsummated marriage and visiting several gynaecologists in Chennai who could not help, my cousin in Trivandrum recommended Dr Chakravarthy. The video consultations were conducted in Tamil so my husband could also follow. Dr Asha walked me through the dilator therapy patiently. Today I am pain-free and we are planning our family. I cannot recommend them enough.
Dubai, UAE
UAEI moved to Dubai right after marriage. The shame of not being able to consummate, combined with being away from family, was crushing me. I found Dr Chakravarthy through a Kerala health forum. Video consultations every two weeks, dilators couriered to me, and Dr Asha checking in regularly over WhatsApp. Five months later, my husband and I have a healthy intimate life. The online treatment works as well as in-person -- I am proof.
Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu
For five years I believed I was abnormal. I had been to three gynaecologists who simply told me "relax and try harder". Dr Chakravarthy was the first to actually diagnose vaginismus and explain it scientifically. The treatment was structured and respectful. My husband attended a few sessions which helped him understand. Twelve weeks later, our marriage was finally consummated. We are both deeply grateful.
Kochi, Kerala
Two years of marriage and we had given up hope. My husband even suggested separation thinking the problem was him. Dr Chakravarthy and Dr Asha treated us as a team. The couples counselling alongside the dilator therapy was a game changer. Vipin became my biggest support. We achieved consummation in our fourth month of treatment and our daughter was born last year. Thank you for saving our marriage.
London, UK
UKNHS waiting times for sexual health are very long in the UK. As a Tamil woman, I also wanted a doctor who understood my cultural background. Dr Chakravarthy offered online video consultations in Tamil and English. The dilator set was shipped to my London address. Within four months of structured treatment, I was free from the condition that haunted me for seven years. Online therapy from Kerala to London -- it actually works.
Thrissur, Kerala
I am very shy by nature and the thought of discussing this with anyone, even a doctor, terrified me. Dr Asha is a blessing. Her gentle, woman-to-woman approach made all the difference. The first consultation was just talking -- no examination. By the third month I had progressed through all the dilator sizes. Today I have a healthy marriage and I have lost the fear that controlled me for so long.
Doha, Qatar
QatarWe had been married for three years and never consummated. Living in Doha, we felt very isolated with this problem. We discovered Dr Chakravarthy through an Indian forum. Online couple sessions, dilators, and Dr Asha personally guiding me through WhatsApp video calls made the journey possible. After 14 weeks we achieved what we thought was impossible. We feel like newlyweds again.
Kollam, Kerala
After being told by elders to "just adjust" and by one doctor that I needed "minor surgery" (which thank god I did not do), I found Dr Chakravarthy. He confirmed I had vaginismus -- NO surgery was needed. The non-surgical treatment with dilators and breathing exercises completely cured me in three months. I am angry I suffered for so long when the right doctor was available in Kerala itself.
Singapore
SingaporeSingapore healthcare is excellent but I could not find a specialist who understood the cultural pressures we Tamil Brahmin women face. The video consultations with Dr Chakravarthy were professional, completely confidential, and culturally sensitive. The treatment programme worked methodically. After four months I was symptom-free and have stayed that way for over a year now. Worth every dollar I spent.
Alappuzha, Kerala
After five years of unconsummated marriage, we were considering divorce. We visited Dr Chakravarthy as a last attempt. He spent over an hour with us in the first visit. The treatment plan was clear and Renjith was actively involved at every step. By month six we had consummated and our relationship is stronger than ever. We have our first child now. Forever grateful.
Toronto, Canada
CanadaI was newly married and panicking three months in. As a young Malayalee girl in Canada, I had no one to turn to. My mother in Trivandrum found Dr Chakravarthy. The first online consultation calmed me completely. The dilator kit arrived in Toronto within 10 days. Eight weeks of structured therapy and I was consummating without pain. I cannot believe I almost let this destroy my marriage.
Madurai, Tamil Nadu
I developed secondary vaginismus after a difficult childbirth and could not be intimate for two years afterward. Local gynaecologists in Madurai had no specific treatment. Dr Chakravarthy treated me online -- consultations in Tamil, exercises explained clearly, and gradual progress tracked weekly. Within four months, intimacy was comfortable again. My husband and I are so thankful.
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Saudi ArabiaAs a young Muslim Malayalee bride in Saudi Arabia, finding any doctor for this was unthinkable locally. Dr Chakravarthy provided fully online treatment with complete respect for my cultural and religious needs. Dr Asha conducted all my one-on-one sessions which was very important to me. After 10 weeks of consistent practice, I was healed. Married life is beautiful now alhamdulillah.
Sydney, Australia
AustraliaFour years married, no consummation, and growing distance between us. Dr Chakravarthy was recommended by Arun's cousin in Kochi. Despite being on the other side of the world, the treatment never felt remote. Weekly video sessions, daily WhatsApp support from Dr Asha when needed, and a clear roadmap. Five months in, we were intimate without pain. We tell every Malayalee couple in Sydney about this clinic.
Bangalore (originally Trichy)
Two years of marriage in Bangalore and I was completely shut down. Multiple gynaecologists in Bangalore offered only medications which did nothing. Dr Chakravarthy in Trivandrum was a video call away. The fact that he could speak fluent Tamil and was so non-judgemental put me at ease in the very first session. Twelve weeks of structured therapy gave me my life back. My husband and I are expecting our first child.
Kozhikode, Kerala
I am a nurse myself and even I did not know about vaginismus until I was diagnosed. Six months of marriage and I could not be intimate with my husband. Dr Asha's approach combined medical clarity with emotional support. The fact that another woman was guiding me through made it easier. Three months of treatment, complete recovery. As a healthcare professional, I appreciate the science-based and ethical approach of this clinic.
Houston, USA
USAUS sexual health specialists are extremely expensive and often did not understand the South Indian context of my issue. Dr Chakravarthy charged a fraction of what local doctors quoted and provided more thorough care. Online video sessions in Malayalam, structured plan, dilators shipped to Houston, and constant support from Dr Asha. Four months from start to finish, completely treated. Best healthcare decision I made.
Palakkad, Kerala
I (Shilpa) had primary vaginismus and we had only managed partial consummation in three years. Manoj never pressured me but I could see his disappointment. Dr Chakravarthy and Dr Asha treated us with such respect as a couple. The sensate focus exercises and dilator therapy together transformed our intimate life. We achieved full consummation in month four. We could not be happier.
Frankfurt, Germany
GermanyI had given up after consulting doctors in three countries -- India, UK, and Germany. None could help me. A Tamil friend in Cochin sent me Dr Chakravarthy's details. The online consultation in Tamil was a turning point. He understood my history better than anyone in 20 minutes. Six months of structured therapy and I was finally free of the condition I had since marriage. Hope had returned.
Ernakulam, Kerala
My wedding night was a disaster and the next several months were filled with shame. My husband was patient but I could see he was hurting too. Dr Asha at Dr Chakravarthy's clinic understood me as only another woman can. The treatment was gentle, the progress was steady, and the kindness was constant. Three months in we were fully intimate. Newlywed couples in Kerala -- please do not wait if you have this issue.
Kuwait City, Kuwait
KuwaitThree years of marriage in Kuwait, no consummation, and increasing pressure from family asking about children. We were desperate. Dr Chakravarthy offered us joint video sessions in Tamil. Karthik's involvement was the difference -- he understood my fear was not personal. After 16 weeks of guided couple therapy and exercises, we consummated successfully. We are now trying for a child. Eternally grateful.
Birmingham, UK
UKBirmingham doctors gave me lubricants and told me to "relax" -- they did not understand vaginismus at all. My mother in Trivandrum insisted I try Dr Chakravarthy. Within one online consultation he had a clear diagnosis and treatment plan. Three months of dedicated practice with dilators while having weekly online check-ins with Dr Asha cured me completely. The cultural understanding alone was worth everything.
